Karla Padron, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor at Northern Illinois University, and she joins Bamby Salcedo to talk about the influences that lead to her academic career. This story includes important characters that helped form Dr. Padron's view of life, including her Mexican grandmother and famed Mexican TV journalist, Jacobo Zabludovsky.

This episode also gets into the 1994 ballot initiative that established a state-run citizenship screening system and prohibited undocumented immigrants from using non-emergency health care, public education, and other services in California, known as Prop 187. She tells about how this initiative played a critical role in her high school experience at South Gate Highschool.

Dr. Padron was the Principal Investigator of the Trans Visible Report. This is the first study to collect data to inform key stakeholders about the current social conditions affecting the lives of Trans Latina Immigrants. Bamby Salcedo was the Co-Investigator of this herstoric report.
